hints & tips
Getting into the nfp sector for the first time can
sometimes be a little daunting. Here are a few pointers to help you along.
- Do some voluntary work. Not only does it show commitment, but it will
give you real insight into how the nfp sector operates. If you're
looking to get into a particularly competitive area, doing some unpaid
work in a related area will give you a serious advantage in the long
run.
- Make sure to mention any voluntary or community work you've done in the
past on your CV. You would be surprised by how many people don't do
this, despite the fact that it's looked on very favourably by employers
in this sector.
- Don't rule out temp work. Charities and other nfp organisations are
increasingly using temps, and for many this offers the perfect
opportunity to get their foot in the door. Not only it will give you
vital experience, but it will help you build contacts and can often lead
to permanent work.
- Be creative and flexible. There is no set career path for getting into
the nfp sector, so don't try and impose one. Even if you can't land your
dream role first time round, getting into the sector and demonstrating
commitment will help you in the long-term.
